My brother is doing... Better. Heapos;s starting to remember more, but heapos;s still having trouble with short term memory. At night, he picks up the rapid questioning and talking and becomes fixated on his cell phone where he reads and re-reads all his text messages. The doctors said this is normal in the process.
some of his doctors have suggested returning to school as soon as possible, one even saying that he should start going this week, while others have suggested that he remain out for awhile to rest. If he were to return, he would be allowed to leave his classes 5 minutes early to get to his next class without getting bumped or jostled in the hallway. He would need an aide for this, only to make sure he actually gets to his next class and so heapos;s not in the hallways alone. This is school policy.
this has my brother upset. He keeps saying that he doesnt want one (understandably) and he keeps asking if they are going to keep him in his same classes or will he have to "switch to the slow classes?" there is no reason to switch him out of his classes, which are all college geared courses. Heapos;s currently in the NJ Stars Program where he can attend a community college for free since heapos;s in the top 20 then move on to a state school (also for free if he continues to keep his grades up). He keeps asking if this is going to change that.
nothing points to that happening. His short term memory is currently messed up, but his intelligence is not. Heapos;s not slow now. There is no change in his speech. He can retain what he reads, strangely has an even larger vocabulary than before (something that can also happen after this type of injury) and is able to do math faster than his doctors. One of them asked him to minus 7 from 100, then 7 from that, then 7 from that, so on and so forth. Eventually, my brother got ahead of the doctor and the doctor had to stop him to make sure the numbers were correct. They were. This didnt make him feel better though. I think he thinks he might become Rain Man.
he has two doctors appts tomorrow; one with the neurologist and one with his GP. Hopefully weapos;ll have some more answers then.
heapos;s definitely still a wise ass. He went with my mom to pick up his EEG test at the Neuro section of the hospital. They asked for directions to the office at the front desk. The directions they were given were wrong. They stop a NURSE in the hallway and ask where they have to go. The nurse raises her LEFT arm and points LEFT and says "go RIGHT at the end of the hall, then make a LEFT" at which point she switches and raises her RIGHT arm (so there is no confusion, she turned around so she was facing the same way as my mom and brother so it wasnt like she was doing the facing opposite thing). My brother stops her and says "um, go which way?" and she repeats herself, doing the same thing. My brother raises his correct arm as she does it again and she says "oh, duh, yes the other way." my brother, without missing a beat, says "and iapos;m the one with the brain injury". Wise ass.
my brother has the most amazing group of friends. They all visited him every day at the hospital (sometimes twice a day). A few called out of work in order to go up. The one day he was feeling down about the whole thing and the guys cheered him up telling him that nothing has been the same without him around. They went to the Grease Trucks without him and they couldnt even kid around, they just sat in the bed of Wapos;s pickup eating and saying nothing. W also said that jonathan will never live this down and "we are going to be talking about this at your wedding, man at your wedding, you know weapos;ll be ragging on you about it" since theyapos;re all a bunch of clowns, this made him feel better too.
hopefully, by tomorrow afternoon, weapos;ll have some better answers and a definite plan as to how to handle all this.
